WEST OXFORD DESIGN SCHEME
The mews which runs between two of the residential blocks is in important part of the block design. While the area is accessible by the public acting as a through road for bikes and pedestrians to the parkland infront the mews is dominated by modernist bay window overhangs, providing natural surveillance to the street below. Underneath these overhangs there will be provision for bicycles and bins contained within an external wooden compartment. This overhang would also provide some protection from the elements.

Schedule 1, Part H of the Building Regulations (2000)17 define locations for the storage and collection of waste. The collection point can be on-street (but see Section 6.8.11), or may be at another location defined by the waste authority.
-
Residential waste will be deposited by one evening per week at each end of the mews to be collected the next morning. The most residents will be required to transport their bins is 37m
-
Waste removal vehicles will be able to pull up either on the North end of the mews or the South. Bollards restricting vehicular access at one end of South Street will be removable. This shouldn’t have a detrimental effect as collection will only occur in the early morning when the area is less commercially active.
It is important that all streets within the block are accessible to emergency services. The Building Regulation requirement B5 (2000)10 concerns ‘Access and Facilities for the Fire Service’. Section 17, ‘Vehicle Access’, includes the following advice on access from the highway.
-
There should be vehicle access for a pump appliance within 45m of houses, this can be included in the design.
-
Due to the linear design of the Mews and a 4m width fire services will be able to access all households .
-
The mews will only be accessible to emergency vehicles
